Get Your Motorcycle Rider Endorsement

Before taking off on your bike, you’ll need a motorcycle endorsement on your valid class E operator’s driver license. To do this, you must complete a Basic Rider Course (BRC) or a Basic Rider Course Updated (BRCu) with an authorized provider.

After you pass an official motorcycle safety class, you’ll need to get your motorcycle license endorsement within one year.

If you don’t get your endorsement within this timeframe, you will have to take a Rider Skills Test (RST) with a Florida Rider Training Program (FRTP) before getting the endorsement.

Once you successfully pass your BRC, BRCu or RST, and pay the required endorsement fees to the Florida Department of Licensing your Class E license will be issued with a motorcycle endorsement.

Motorcycle Only Licenses in Florida

If you want a “Motorcycle Only” driver’s license, you must be at least 16 and hold a Learner’s Permit for one year. In that year there must be no traffic violations, speeding tickets, etc.

Additionally, you must pass the same knowledge test for a standard driver’s license, also known as a Class E operator’s license and a BRC or BRCu. Then you can take your certificate of completion to a driver license office and get your Motorcycles Only license.

Take a Motorcycle Rider Safety Course

Although you must take a safety course to get your motorcycle endorsement, if it has been a while, you might want to take a refresher. There are authorized sponsors of Basic Rider Course motorcycle safety courses in every county in Florida.

These Florida Rider Training Programs (FRTP) use curriculum developed by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation in a 15-hour course that offers an introduction to the fundamentals of safe and responsible motorcycling. The course also includes the basic knowledge and skills necessary to ride safely on streets and highways in Florida.

If this sounds too beginner for you and you are ready to expand your skills, you can take one of the following courses from FRTP:

  • Basic Bike Bonding RiderCourse
  • Ultimate Bike Bonding RiderCourse
  • Basic RiderCourse 2
  • Basic RiderCourse 2 updated
  • Advanced RiderCourse
  • Returning Rider Basic RiderCourse

These courses are geared to help you acquire knowledge and skills, and are suitable for people of all experience levels. Even if you’re a pro, there’s information via FRTP classes that can benefit you and improve your skills.

Take Care of Your Bike

A key element of motorcycle safety is making sure your equipment is in the best shape possible on every ride. We’ve provided information about pre- and post-ride motorcycle maintenance safety checks that you can review. Some key takeaways include:

  • Look over your bike before every ride. Check for fluid leaks, loose parts, or damaged tires.
  • Sit on your bike. Make sure your bike has a proper feel and function in brakes, levers, throttle, and handlebars.
  • Start the engine. Listen for unusual sounds and verify all of the lights and gauges are operating properly.
  • Determine if there are any changes to your bike. If anything seems different or “off” trust your gut and don’t hit the road until you are sure your bike is in proper order.

Regular maintenance that you can perform on your bike should follow the Motorcycle Safety Foundation checklist that uses the acronym TCLOCS, which stands for:

  • Tires and Wheels
  • Controls
  • Lights and Electrics
  • Oil Levels
  • Chassis
  • Stand

Review the checklist before and after a ride to keep yourself safe on the road.

Practice Safe Driving on Florida Roads

Florida has some of the most beautiful routes to ride, including the A1A and Big Bend Byway. Stay safe on those highways by following the rules of the road and practicing defensive driving techniques.

Most motorcycle accidents occur because the other driver isn’t keeping an eye out for bikers. However, you can prevent some wrecks by being prepared as well.

  • Keep an eye on the weather. Make sure you ride in good weather and avoid driving when it’s raining or foggy. This makes it harder for drivers in cars and trucks to see you.
  • Make yourself visible. Wear brightly colored clothing, reflective tape or patches, and confirm your lights are working.
  • Ride in a safe location. Avoid other vehicles’ blind spots and riding near large commercial trucks. Keep a good sight-line between yourself and other vehicles.
