Before taking off on your bike, you’ll need a motorcycle endorsement on your valid class E operator’s driver license. To do this, you must complete a Basic Rider Course (BRC) or a Basic Rider Course Updated (BRCu) with an authorized provider.
After you pass an official motorcycle safety class, you’ll need to get your motorcycle license endorsement within one year.
If you don’t get your endorsement within this timeframe, you will have to take a Rider Skills Test (RST) with a Florida Rider Training Program (FRTP) before getting the endorsement.
Once you successfully pass your BRC, BRCu or RST, and pay the required endorsement fees to the Florida Department of Licensing your Class E license will be issued with a motorcycle endorsement.
If you want a “Motorcycle Only” driver’s license, you must be at least 16 and hold a Learner’s Permit for one year. In that year there must be no traffic violations, speeding tickets, etc.
Additionally, you must pass the same knowledge test for a standard driver’s license, also known as a Class E operator’s license and a BRC or BRCu. Then you can take your certificate of completion to a driver license office and get your Motorcycles Only license.
Although you must take a safety course to get your motorcycle endorsement, if it has been a while, you might want to take a refresher. There are authorized sponsors of Basic Rider Course motorcycle safety courses in every county in Florida.
These Florida Rider Training Programs (FRTP) use curriculum developed by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation in a 15-hour course that offers an introduction to the fundamentals of safe and responsible motorcycling. The course also includes the basic knowledge and skills necessary to ride safely on streets and highways in Florida.
